Hmmm,

I just tried a sphere{0,15 interior{media{...}}} instead of atmospheric
media, with the same problem

Mark

PS

here is the media
sphere{
  0, 20
  interior{
    media {
      intervals 10
      samples 1,1
      confidence 0.9
      variance 1.0/128
      ratio 0.9
      scattering {
        1,
        rgb<0.05,0.05,0.05>
      }
      method 3
    }
  }
  hollow
}
